The Actor’s Guide To Surviving the Really F*cking Quiet Bit

Oh! Hello horrifically, deadly silent acting patch! What are you doing back here so soon? Honestly, there was absolutely no rush. I was doing fine. But, well, here you are…all quiet, unwelcome and absolutely pissing USELESS. There’s only so much sitting in coffee shops, hiding behind a laptop and drinking coffee’s that I can’t afford, an out of work Actress like myself, can do. And in all honesty, between me and you, it’s driving me absolutely insane.

A friendly guide to auditions

Here is a brief list of important things I have learnt about auditioning. I should point out to avoid wasting all of your time that absolutely none of these tips involve help in actually getting the job once you’re in the room. Still trying to figure that one out for myself. I’ll let you know.

Katie Elin-Salt

Katie is an actor, singer and musician from Bridgend in South Wales now living in London. She has done some nice bits of work in all these things over the last few years that she’s chuffed with.

Aside from this – most commonly known Princess Elsa on weekends, she has also starred as Peppa Pig and Supergirl in various children’s parties across the UK. You may also recognise Katie from working in the returns section of Ann Summers Cardiff at Christmas 2010. Series Regular of Judge Judy (Playing person watching it on the sofa whilst once again not in the gym)

It’s time to give a little back to the Honest Actors’ community. It’s time to share some of your hard-earned wisdom. It’s time to share the things you still struggle with.

As part of getting the social media accounts buzzing again – and generating some buzz for the potential new series – I have put together

  • Actors Who Didn't Train

Didn’t train? Get that Chip Off Your Shoulder

Didn’t train? Get that chip off your shoulder…

As we all know, knockbacks are hard to take and as much as we don’t like to admit it, they do take a toll. So sometimes, after the initial ecstasy and immense satisfaction of getting a job, the panic sets in. What if I’m not good enough? I probably wasn’t their first choice…what if my name was really similar to the person that they actually wanted…but now they’ve got me!? I can’t speak for anyone else but I spend almost every day leading up to the job in a mild (major) state of panic and self doubt worrying that it was all a mistake and that I am in fact not what they wanted at all.

Grace Hogg-Robinson

Actress hailing from a very small hamlet, known by friends for being clumsy and overly enthusiastic, known by strangers (that watch daytime TV) for being a sassy goth. Sometimes found selling sweets, sometimes found talking to herself…ah well, we’re all mad here.

  • actress writer

“Oh, you’re a writer now… ?”

People like to categorize, it makes them feel safe.

Wait, not “them” – I mean ‘us’. We ALL do it to help us feel safe. Categorizing in this sort of way is the first thing we do in order to find common ground when meeting new people:

Alun Saunders

Sometimes Actor, sometimes Writer; always Husband, always Dad.
Thanks to his parents’ encouragement towards the Welsh language and musical instruments, Alun has managed to work as an Actor in between MCing Welsh Banquets for visiting tourists. He now knows how to say ‘Cheers’ in over 24 languages. Iechyd da!

Unrequited Love: Why Does Acting Hate Me?

Unrequited love happened to me when I was 14 and I’d never suffered such unjust agony before. It seemed impossible that the recipient of my infatuation would barely register when I came into the room. The total indifference was made all the more torturous by alarmingly sporadic, very occasional, incredibly minor – glimmers of hope. A smile. A friendly hug. A ‘how are you?’ became the axis upon which my world could spin or stick.

A.N. Actor

Sometimes someone submits a blog and requests that it be published anonymously. This is not *The* Anonymous Actor, just someone who wishes not to be identified.

The Career Advice Actors Wish They’d Been Given Sooner (PART 1)

In preparation for today’s seminar at Surviving Actors, I trawled through over 700 responses to the Honest Actors’ survey to find the things actors most commonly say when asked, ‘If you could go back to the start of your career and offer yourself advice, what would it be?’ . For those of you who couldn’t make it along, I’m going to share the top twenty responses…
